You Can Help the Poor People of Chimbote by Getting Involved

Welcome Friend!

We love it when people like you get to this page. You are clearly a “DO”er and we need your help. Without active advocates, our mission would cease to exist and the poor people of Chimbote would continue to live in unimaginable misery.

So, how can you help? There are many, many ways people of all ages and abilities can get involved with the mission of Friends of Chimbote. We invite you to take a few minutes to explore several options below to find one or two that spark your interest. We welcome your help and look forward to adding you to our circle of friends.

Volunteer Your Time and Talents

We’re proud to tell our donors and advocates that more than 92% of our donations directly fund our programs at Father Jack’s mission. Without the dedicated and tireless help of volunteers to complete operational tasks, this remarkable achievement would not be possible. For more information about volunteering at Father Jack’s mission in Chimbote, Peru, please see our Visit Chimbote page.

Our volunteer needs in the United States, include a variety of tasks including the following:

  • Gala & event assistance
  • Collecting, sorting & packing donations for containers
  • Hosting Father Jack, Sister Peggy or other friends from Chimbote

For more information about these and other volunteer opportunities, please contact our office at 701.364.0162 Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Visit Chimbote

To fully comprehend the plight of the poor in Chimbote, you must walk among them. Perhaps it’s a bucket list wish of yours to visit a foreign country or maybe you have a deep-seeded urge to pay forward some of your good fortune, regardless of what inspires you to visit our mission in Chimbote, it will be a trip you’ll never forget. Our supervised group trips allow you to get some dust on your shoes, work up a sweat and temporarily immerse yourself in projects that improve the dire conditions in which Chimbote’s poorest residents live. The irony of serving the poor is that you receive far more than you give. It’s a lifetime adventure everyone should experience at least once.

Annual Container Shipments

Our mission is also in need of many tangible items and products such as, personal hygiene items, glasses, medications, powdered formula for infants, Spanish/English dictionaries and books, school supplies, wheelchairs, medical equipment and supplies, and more. Each year, 40-foot containers are shipped to Chimbote filled with new and gently used supplies and equipment that are difficult and costly to obtain within Peru. Our rotary club friends, sister parishes and congregations share the cost of making these annual shipments. Our most recent containers were shipped from Minnesota and North Carolina.

Minnesota Container:

To make the most of this gift, only those items that are truly needed will be included in the shipments. A new wish list is created each year by our Minnesota container co-chairs, Sue Leahy and Tony & Dorothy Brama, who oversee the collection, manifest, storage, packing and shipment of Minnesota containers. If you would like to make a donation and/or volunteer to help coordinate the Minnesota container shipment, please email Sue or Tony and Dorothy.

Host a Home Party

One of greatest gifts you can give to the Friends of Chimbote organization is to share it with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbors to ensure the mission remains alive and well for future generations. Introduce the Friends of Chimbote organization to your acquaintances, share photos and stories about your relationship with us and inspire them to learn more about us in the hopes that we will be able to form a friendship with them as well. When you endorse our mission, you establish a legacy of giving that produces a ripple effect and expands our circle of friends.

To make it easy to host a home party, we have developed a home party kit which includes the following:

  • A planning checklist
  • Helpful hints for telling the mission story
  • Invitations (either electronic or mail)
  • A DVD slideshow
  • A simple take-home piece for each guest
  • Sign up forms for monthly Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT)
  • Thank you notecards
